Officials Investigate After Man Drowns In Youghiogheny River

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Emergency crews were called out to the Youghiogheny River near Perry Township, Fayette County Monday after a man drowned.

The scene is along the Youghiogheny River trail in the small village of Layton.

A man was reportedly pulled from the river and CPR was performed. He was rushed to Uniontown Hospital, but officials say resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

Police have identified the man as 61-year-old William Philips of McMurray.

Some people who were out Monday said there were lots of people out on the river celebrating the holiday and that some parts of the water can get dicey.

"Especially with the rocks, like, you can see when the rocks are common, but once you go over them, they're bad," said Samantha Chuboy.

Police said Philips rolled his kayak and drowned.

State Police are continuing to investigate.
