Pirates' Scout Rene Gayo Always Knew Polanco Was Special

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan)- Pittsburgh Pirates Latin America Scouting Director Rene Gayo took a moment to join the Cook and Poni Show to discuss Gregory Polanco's major league debut.

Gayo was the one who signed Polanco; and although he is happy this day has come, it wasn't a surprise to him.

"I'm not surprised. He is a great player and a great hitter," Gayo said. "If I didn't think every guy I signed had a chance to make it to the majors than I am just wasting the Pirates money."

Gayo said that he was looked at very funny when he signed Polanco as a outfielder when everyone saw him showcased as a pitcher.

"I said he was going to hit," Gayo said. "They looked and me like I was crazy."

I am sure that those who laughed at him are not anymore after seeing him rise through the minor leagues and now ready to make his major league debut tonight at PNC Park against the Chicago Cubs.

Polanco will be in the starting lineup tonight batting second and playing in right field.

Gayo said a knee operation will keep him from being able to see Polanco's debut tonight in person, but he will be watching. But as a scout, he is always watching.

"I will be rooting tonight, but tomorrow I will be looking to get another one," Gayo said. "Tomorrow, I will be looking for the guy to take his job."
