Police Dash Cam Captures Violent Shootout In Port Authority Parking Lot

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A traffic stop in a Port Authority parking lot near 5th Avenue turned into a violent gun battle March 17, 2013.

The man who pleaded guilty to the attempted homicide of one of the officers involved is 20-year-old Dante Bonner of Homewood.

The dash cams inside the cruisers capture the drama.

The first thing you see is police pulling them over. To the left you can spot Bonner running from the vehicle.

Another camera shows Officer Kertis in pursuit on foot. He trips over a parking barrier, breaking both wrists. That's when Bonner opens fire, striking the officer twice in the leg.

Kertis still manages to return fire, along with his partner, Officer Charles Thomas, hitting Bonner several times in the torso. He's down, but still conscious and clearly in pain.

Other officers arrive and surround the vehicle, with three other suspects still inside. They're cuffed and placed under arrest, while Bonner and officer Kertis are rushed to the hospital.

Bonner will be sentenced in September.

Up until last week, Officer Kertis had been off duty since an April shooting, in which a suspect was killed. The D.A. says Kertis used justifiable force in that incident as well.
