PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) – The Pittsburgh Pirates announced today the signing of five players from their 2014 draft class.
The five players signed were fifth-round draft choice Michael Suchy, an outfielder from Florida Gulf Coast University, sixth-round pick Tyler Eppler, a right-handed pitcher from Sam Houston State University, tenth-round selection Alex McRae, a right-handed pitcher from Jacksonville University, 12th-rounder Tyler Filliben, an infielder from Samford University and 15th-round choice Eric Dorsch, a right-handed pitcher from Kent State University.
Suchy was named First-Team Atlantic Sun All-Conference in his junior season after hitting .318 with 16 doubles, four triples, eight home runs, 10 stolen bases and a career-high 49 RBI’s in 60 games.
RHP Epple was a Second-Team All-Southland Conference selection this year after posting a 9-6 record and a 3.20 ERA along with 67 strikeouts.
RHP McRae was rated the fourth-best prospect in the Atlantic Sun Conference by Baseball America at the start of the 2014 season and followed that up with a 5-7 record with 69 strikeouts in 16 appearances.
Infielder Filliben hit .293 with eight double, eight home runs and 43 RBI’s as a junior and ranked fourth in the Southern Conference with five triples.
Finally, Dorsch, a right-handed pitcher went 2-4 with a 3.56 ERA and 10 saves in 27 relief appearances this past year. Dorsch was also selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 21st round of the 2013 draft, but did not sign.
