Nearly 12 Cars Damaged In South Side Smash & Grabs

SOUTH SIDE (KDKA) – Police are investigating after nearly a dozen cars were damaged by smash and grab robberies on the South Side overnight.

There were several reports of cars with broken windows and scratches on 22nd, 23rd, Josephine and Jane Streets starting as early as 8 p.m. Wednesday.

"We park here every day; we start work at 6 a.m. We came out to go to lunch, and my vehicle and three other vehicles had their window smashed," said Dan Dittler, a victim of the smash and grabs.

The vandals and thieves were busy, targeting several streets from Bingham to 22nd and 23rd to Josephine. According to the police report, it all started around 5:30 a.m. and lasted for several hours.

Dittler works at Raff Printing on 22nd Street and parks a half block away on Josephine. His vehicle is new.

"I just bought it. Actually, the two vehicles are newer than mine one is a '14 the other a '15," he said.

The police report also indicates several items were taken from the vehicles once the windows were broken, including a handbag from one and all of its contents, five bullets from another and a speed loader. Several victims were also missing change.

"Everything I had inside my glove compartment was put on my passenger seat, except for about $5 in change, it was taken," said Shaun Johnston, another victim.

No arrests have been made and no other details have been released at this time.
