Former Pirate Sean Casey Holds Youth Baseball Camp
UPPER ST. CLAIR (KDKA) -- Dozens of kids were pumped up, ready to play some baseball.
"I'm excited to learn new stuff and just play baseball," said Matt Gaither, of Upper St. Clair.
"I would like to play pitcher because I like to get the ball out, I like to play baseball," added Joey Hardman, of Akron, Ohio.
The young athletes are taking part in a baseball camp hosted by former Pittsburgh Pirate, Sean Casey.
He is one of the coaches, along with other big league players and local college coaches.
"They're going to learn unbelievable baseball," Casey said. "They learn outfield, you're going to learn pitching, you're going to learn infield work, you're going to learn base running, you're going to learn hitting, you're going to learn everything you need to learn there."
Casey, a 12-year MLB veteran and three-time all-star, is from Upper St. Clair.
He still lives there with his family and says being able to host this camp in his hometown is beyond rewarding.
He focuses a lot on character, having a positive attitude and enthusiasm.
"We think that's what our camp is about, is teaching these kids the game, but also teaching these kids how to be great teammates, how to play the game right, how to play the game hard, respect each other, respect themselves, it's a great thing all around," said Casey.
The kids agree and say this will be a big highlight of their summer break.
This clinic is about more than just baseball, what you see out on the field.
Money from the camp will support the Miracle League of South Hills and the building of a new playground for children with special needs.
Construction has already started at Boyce Mayview Park.
