Repairs Continue On Route 228 In Cranberry Twp.
CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- High winds and severe storms ripped through the area Tuesday, but a busy road in Butler County is still closed.
Route 228 between Route 19 and Cranberry Woods Drive remains closed in Cranberry Township, and it's not expected to reopen until Thursday afternoon at the earliest.
During Tuesday's severe weather, nine large utility poles were ripped out of the ground along the busy roadway. The high voltage lines were left dangling across the road.
On Wednesday evening, during the second rush hour commute of the day, drivers taking the detour were in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
"It's hectic, but it's fine, you know. You just have to take the back roads and put up with it. They're working hard down there."
Cranberry Township's Director of Public Safety Jeff Schueler said that crews had issues with a couple of cable lines during the restoration of the nine poles that fell.
"They need to do more evaluation, have the engineers look at it and figure out what they can do to get the line working so they can raise it back up," Schueler said.
He says what's making the Consolidated Communications line so difficult to repair is the fact that it's 21 pounds per foot. Their cable, phone and Internet customers should expect service outages.
Crews will continue to work on repairs overnight and through the morning rush hour.
Officials say the goal is to have Route 228 reopened by noon Thursday.
