Video Of Singing Baby Doctor Going Viral

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- What a local doctor does after he delivers a baby is attracting attention across the nation.

A video of Dr. Carey Andrew-Jaja from Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC that's on YouTube has hundreds of thousands of views, and could reach a million.

Dr. Andrew-Jaja sings to every baby he delivers. Sometimes happy birthday with the whole delivery room joining in, even the reluctant singers.

"I just say it's a requirement now that everybody sings," said Dr. Andrew-Jaja with a smile. "People say they can't sing. It doesn't matter. We all join in together."

It began during his residency when he worked with another doctor who sang to babies.

"And when he was about to retire, he told me to continue this tradition. He handed over the baton to me," he said.

That was decades ago, and now he's sung to about 8,000 newborns!

"I have been doing it every time I deliver, and they won't let me leave the room unless I sing," he says with a laugh and an infectious smile.

In addition to "Happy Birthday," he sings other songs solo, including "Not While I'm Around" from the musical "Sweeney Todd" and "It's a Wonderful World."

He says the miracle of life still amazes him. He says it's enough to make you forget about all the crises in the world.

The video of the doctor singing was posted last year, but it gained momentum in the last week after a few websites wrote about it.
