PennDOT To Reopen Outbound Liberty Tunnel Ahead Of Schedule

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- There's a little bit of good news for drivers who use the Liberty Tunnel.

According to PennDOT, work on the outbound side of the tunnels is progressing and should be wrapped up by Saturday at 5 p.m.

The outbound closure began back on July 11 so crews could repaint the tunnel.

Now, it's wrapping up two days ahead of schedule.

However, there will be some occasional overnight outbound closures as crews complete various construction activities. No dates have been set for that yet though.

Officials with PennDOT also say there will also be overnight closures on the inbound side. Those will continue nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 p.m. until Aug. 8.

Now that the outbound tunnel is close to being finished, the inbound tunnel will also need to be painted, but dates for that have not been scheduled.
