Steve Blass Is Rooting For Alvarez to Succeed

PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- Pirates broadcaster Steve Blass joined Colin Dunlap Saturday for the last hour of Bucco Talk.

They discussed the struggles of Pedro Alvarez.

"Nobody roots harder for Pedro Alvarez than I do because I don't want this to continue down the road as it did in my situation. And I qualify that I don't think it's in that scenario at all," Blass said.

Dunlap asked Blass about Justin Wilson hitting a Dodgers batter Tuesday night after Andrew McCutchen was beaned. Wilson was ejected from the game by home plate umpire Toby Basner.

"It doesn't have to get out of hand. You don't have to get the umpire involved. Now, if Justin Wilson hits that guy in retaliation for Andrew, and then it goes on from then, then the umpires -- they have to get involved, I understand that. But Basner did not have to throw Justin Wilson out of the game," Blass said.

Dunlap asked Blass if players are watching the scoreboard as the playoff race heats up.

"You pay attention in a way, but I don't think you pay much attention after the Anthem until your ballgame is over. You can't do that. You can't be thinking about that. At this level, this game demands your complete concentration," Blass said.
