New "Super Stop" Opens In Robinson Town Center

ROBINSON (KDKA) -- Led by Governor Corbett, public officials cut the ribbon on what they call a super stop with a new bus shelter and other amenities to accommodate thousands of commuters who use Robinson Town Center as a base to shuttle in and out of town to jobs in this growing region of Allegheny County.

"Thirty thousand – 30,000 people work within a mile-and-a-half of where we are right now. Thirty thousand," repeated Corbett at the ribbon cutting.

The project -- in the works for years by ACTA or the Airport Corridor Transportation Association -- is meant to serve several commuter needs.

"What's so special about the super stop here behind us is that it will be able to be utilized through various modes of transportation," noted PA Sen. Matt Smith. "You have hiking, you have biking, you have individuals who are taking the Port Authority service here."

Allegheny County executive Rich Fitzgerald says this super stop targets the future.

"This young generation -- they want to use a lot of different methods of getting around. they want to use their bikes and bike trail to get to work."

And the stop has features you won't find elsewhere.

Suppose you ride your bike to this super stop in order to catch a bus into town, and then you discover you need some repairs. Turns out there's a repair station here with all kinds of bike tools, like a Phillips head, or a regular wrench, or the tools to take off that tire.

Suppose the tire is out of air? There's a pump here too, all set to fill you up and send you on your way.

Bus riders on the Port Authority and ACTA's special shuttle to area employers like the mix of uses.

"I think it's really nice," said Ed Richer of Moon, as he waited for a bus. "It's going to be nice for the Montour trail access. It's good to catch the bus here, too."

The land was donated by nearby IKEA with donations from IKEA, PNC Bank, and state taxpayers.
