15-Year-Old Shot, Killed In Duquesne

DUQUESNE (KDKA) -- A young, standout athlete, who was also a key witness in a shooting that injured his pregnant friend, is dead after officials say he was ambushed and gunned down in Duquesne.

Leroy Powell, 15, didn't see the gunman coming and never had a chance to run.

Allegheny County Police say he was ambushed in the 1000-block of Crawford Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.

The talented athlete played youth football and looked forward to his first year of high school.

KDKA's Kym Gable talked to Powell's former football coach Brock White.

"Actually, I work at the hospital where they brought him in, so it was a little deeper to actually see his family coming and say his name," said White. "It took a lot of air out of me."

After police identified Powell, they realized his connection to another shooting in Duquesne.

Powell testified in July in the homicide case against 15-year-old Eric Taylor, who was ordered to stand trial that day. He's accused of shooting Powell's friend, DaRae Delgado.

Her unborn son died after being struck by bullet.

Powell originally told police he saw a gun that night, but changed his story in court.

The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office released the initial videotape interview. KDKA made the decision that day to withhold his name and conceal his identity.

Meanwhile, Coach White is holding on to the memory of his star player.

"He scored a lot of touchdowns for me. He was the guy if I needed something I would go to him," said White. "A fast kid, a quiet kid; I knew his family real good."
