Mark Melancon: Rivera Was A Big Influence

PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- Pirates closer Mark Melancon earned his 21st save of the season Friday night against the Padres, a career high.

On The Bob Pompeani Show Saturday, Melancon credited retired Yankees closer Mariano Rivera with being a big influence on him.

"I was fortunate enough to be in a bullpen with Mariano Rivera, and be able to learn from him and see what he does. He was a big influence on me. One of his things was just to play the game right, and do things right, and respect the game, and I've tried to continue to do that," Melancon said.

Pompeani asked what makes Pirates Pitching Coach Ray Searage successful, and why he has the respect of so many people.

"Ray is just so positive. You just want to work for Ray. He's a good guy and always rooting for you, like I said very positive and upbeat, just a fun coach to be around," Melancon said.
