Police Chief Investigated After Being Involved In Serious Crash

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police are investigating a car crash that involved a local police chief and seriously injured both the chief and a woman.

Moon Township Police report that witnesses say an unmarked police car driven by Coraopolis Police Chief Alan DeRusso drove through a steady red light and hit a woman's car who was crossing with a green light.

It happened at the intersection of Route 51 and Thorn Run Road last Thursday morning.

Chief DeRusso was traveling south on Route 51 toward Coraopolis, according to a press release by Moon Township Police.

The release does not address whether Chief DeRusso had his lights and siren on.

Sue McWilliams lives nearby, and says her husband went to help with the crash, "he says the two cars that were involved, one went through a red light, and that they crashed."

Both the woman and the chief were seriously injured but do not have life threatening injuries, according to police.

A third vehicle was also hit, but the driver was not hurt.

There are cameras at the intersection, but it's not known if they contain anything that can be used in the investigation.
