Elderly Sisters Targeted In Roofing Inspection Scam

HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – We've heard the story before, and this one's just as heart breaking.

One victim is an 88-year-old woman battling cancer and a heart condition, the other a 93-year-old woman in ill health.

But that didn't stop suspects from ripping them off for thousands of dollars.

State Police say it was about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon when the suspects came knocking on the victim's front door on Pleasant Valley Road in Hempfield Township.

"They came to her house and told her they were conducting a roof check," said State Police Tpr. Steve Limani. "There was a warranty on the roof."

The woman did have a new roof put on a few years back, so the one victim let them in without checking the "roof inspector's" credentials.

"The gentlemen came in," Limani said. "One occupied her time discussing the roof. The other was ransacking her bedroom."

The one victim's daughter didn't want to be identified, but told KDKA that the thieves were gone and saying everything is good. It was for them, they left with several thousand dollars the two elderly sisters had.

"It's a typical scenario for someone trying a scam," said Limani.

The suspects are described as:

  • One is 5 feet 11 inches tall, stocky, in his 50s.
  • The other is about 5 feet 8 inches tall with bad teeth – missing a few, in his 20s.

Both are Hispanic males and spoke broken English.

The two were driving an older model green pickup, possibly a Ford with a cap on the bed.

If you know anything about these suspects or believe you may have been one of their victims, call state police.
