Kevin Creagh: Pirates Should Consider Gerrit Cole For Closer's Role

PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- Gerrit Cole will likely come off of the disabled list this week, which leads to the question of which pitcher would be removed from the Pirates' starting rotation?

Kevin Creagh, of SteelCityBuzz.com, told Tab Douglas that if the club is still worried about Cole's injuries lingering, they should consider using him as a closer instead.

"Put Cole at closer, and imagine him getting all juiced up with that music blaring, coming out gassing at 96-99 (mph) because he knows he only has to do it one inning. And then the people have to face his slider, that curve, mix in that changeup. There aren't any closers out there with the command of four average to plus pitches," Creagh said.

If the Pirates decide to put Cole in the rotation, Creagh said that Edinson Volquez could succeed in the bullpen.

"He would be a dominant, I think, seventh or eighth inning guy just because he's been showing a lot more velocity this year than he has in the past," Creagh said.
