Pirates Place Morton On 15-Day DL

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Pirates are getting ready to welcome a starting pitcher back into the fold. However, another starter is heading to the disabled list.

According to a statement from the team, Charlie Morton has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with right hip inflammation.

The move is retroactive to Aug. 16.

Morton is 5-12 this season with a 3.84 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.

Infielder Brent Morel has been called up from Triple-A Indianapolis to take Morton's spot on the active roster.

In 83 games with Indianapolis, Morel holds a .251 batting average to go along with four home runs and 45 RBI.

There had been some talk over the past few days about what the Pirates would do with Gerrit Cole likely coming off the DL this week.

On Sunday, Kevin Creagh, of SteelCityBuzz.com, told Tab Douglas that if the club is still worried about Cole's injuries lingering, they should consider using him as a closer instead.
