At Least 2 Shot At East Liberty Basketball Court

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- At least two young men were shot and wounded Friday evening while playing on a basketball court in East Liberty.

It happened around 8:20 p.m. in the 5600-block of Broad Street at North St. Clair Street.

Lynette Wilson, who lives in a townhouse near the basketball court, ran over to help one of the shooting victims before paramedics arrived.

Wilson said, "I told him to stay calm and don't move."

She said he was conscious and talking despite what appeared to be a chest wound.

The two shooting victims were taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, both listed in stable condition.

A third shooting victim may have gotten into a car and then driven from the scene.

Police recovered about half a dozen shell casings, according to Sonya Toler, the spokeswoman for the Pittsburgh Public Safety Department.

"We've had a shooting here at what appears to be a pick-up basketball game. It wasn't anything organized," said Toler. "We know right now that we have two who have been shot. I don't have the details as to where or the extent of their injuries just yet. Witnesses have told us they believe there was a third shooting victim who supposedly jumped into a vehicle. We don't have a description of that vehicle."

Investigators have not said if they recovered any weapons.

Some children were playing nearby at a playground, but none were injured in the hail of bullets.
