14-Year-Old Robbery Suspect Recaptured After Fleeing Police In Handcuffs

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A teenager was caught after an attempted robbery Wednesday morning, but police would soon find out this young suspect wasn't going to jail quietly.

A 14-year-old in handcuffs was being transported by Pittsburgh Police from Zone 5 to the Allegheny County Municipal Court, when he made a run for it, with authorities hot on his trail.

"The Port Authority Police, the Allegheny County Sheriff's Department, and the Mount Oliver Police even came to help. This isn't something that normally people just leave us to our own devices. Even if it was another neighboring municipality, we would often go and help," Pittsburgh Police Public Information Officer Sonya Toler said.

The juvenile originally was arrested around 3:30 a.m. for attempted robbery.

He made a break for freedom at 6:45 a.m. and it wasn't until almost 8 a.m. when he was apprehended for the second time as he tried to sprint across the Liberty Bridge.

The teen was still in handcuffs in the middle of rush hour traffic.

"It's not something that happens frequently, no. But of course, any time you have somebody in motion, there is that risk of them fleeing," Toler said.

The list of charges against the young man has not been released, but Toler expects at least one more to be added to it.

"I do expect that fleeing will be a part of the additional charges," Toler said.
