Rosedale Tech Becomes County's 15th College

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A local technical institute is celebrating its 65th anniversary and a name change.

Rosedale Technical Institute in Kennedy Township is now officially Rosedale Technical College.

School president, Dennis Wilke, made the announcement today on campus.

"It's about time we got respect for what we do here. Our students, they learn complex ideas, they get into high tech stuff and they've earned the designation of college student," Wilke said.

Rosedale is now Allegheny County's 15th college. They currently have more than 400 students training for careers in fields like automotive, diesel, and electrical.

The school's job placement rate is over 90 percent, which is a statistic that is certainly encouraging to young students.

Just today, there were 30 employers on hand to meet and talk with students about potential jobs.

"It's great to come to a place that also is integrated into the field," Ian Gayman said.

"We're not about the Ph.D or the MBA, we're about the job. That's what we like to say," Wilke said.

There is a lot happening at Rosedale. It's not just the state-approved name change from institute to college, soon students will have more options as four brand new programs are being added.

Those programs are:

  • Industrial technician, which will feed into manufacturing and energy-related jobs.
  • Applied business management for students who hope to someday open their own business.
  • Welding
  • Collison repair

"It's really exciting. We still teach the electrical, the automotive, the diesel that we have been for 65 years, but being on the forefront of the technical part is awesome. It's great," instructor J.R. Mangan said.
