PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — For the first time in more than a week, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is publicly addressing his handling of the player domestic abuse scandal.
He apologized and vowed that the NFL will do better in the future.
Goodell says the league will implement new personal conduct policies and that everyone from players to staff will undergo training to help prevent domestic violence.
NFL will also provide support for a domestic violence hotline and a sexual violence resource center.
But is it enough? Some are calling for Goodell’s resignation.
We asked football fans what they thought at Friday night’s high school football game between West Mifflin and Ringgold.
“I just think he should step down,” said Rhonda Morrissey.
KDKA’s David Highfield: “You think he screwed up?”
Morrissey: “Big time. Big time.”
“I’m not sure if he said enough,” said Bob Kremer of West Mifflin. “I mean, he’s backtracking now because of earlier statements. They just need to let men know you cannot beat up on women.”
Bo Tkocs didn’t think Goodell should resign, but instead said, “I think they should suspend him. Get someone else as an interim and suspend him.”
Finally, Dannyel Esters believes we still haven’t heard the truth.
“He knew,” said Esters. “You can’t sit here and say you’re the only one that didn’t know, but other people knew about it. He knew. It was a cover-up.”
Goodell says the NFL has an opportunity to create change when it comes to domestic violence, not only in the league, but also in society.
Meanwhile, an investigative report by ESPN is raising new questions. They once again surround the now-infamous Ray Rice surveillance video from a casino elevator.
ESPN is reporting an Atlantic City Police officer gave the Baltimore Ravens director of security a detailed account of the incident just hours after the assault. Click here to read the report.
