Little Runners Take Part In Jr. Great Race

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - For more than three decades, the City of Pittsburgh has hosted the Great Race. Its popularity has even expanded into a week-long event.

The festivities started with Sunday's Dollar Bank Junior Great Race.

From those who recently mastered the ability to run, to moms and dads who ran with their kids, the Junior Great Race introduced kids to the feeling of being the best they can be.

KDKA-TV's Brenda Waters was there to get the runners started.

The Junior Great Race isn't so much about how fast you run as much as it is simply that you run.

"It was long and it was tiring, but I never stopped running," Hayden Vollbrecht said.

Parents were also encouraged to run with their kids.

"We are trying to start walking and running with the kids. Keep us healthy. We finished. He's more tired than we are," Munirah Brown said.

There were plenty of other things to entertain the kids before and after the mile run.

Kids under the age of 5 ran the Tot Trot and while it was only 50 yards long, they got medals for finishing just like the big kids.

"I liked going past the water because some of the water sprayed on my head and it felt good," John Hirth said.
