Clint Barmes On Playoff Run: 'I Couldn't Be Happier For All These Guys'

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - He's had under 100 at-bats, played in only 47 games and driven in seven runs this year, yet Pirates shortstop Clint Barmes has made an impact on this year's team and maybe future teams.

"It's kind of like Steve Kerr when he used to play for the Bulls. He didn't get to play much at the end, but he guarded Michael Jordan in practice every day," Manager Clint Hurdle said. "Barmes doesn't get to play much, but he's been tutoring Jordy every day. He's been working with Walker every day."

Mercer replaced Barmes for a good part of last year and there is no question Mercer is the everyday shortstop with 11 homers and 53 RBI this year. Instead of pouting, the 35-year-old Barmes enjoys his role.

"It's been awesome. It's been so fun to watch the young guys step in, no matter what their role is and take over and trust their ability. To see the confidence they have when they come in, it's obviously why we are where we are at right now."

"He continues to feed and share insight with our guys," Hurdle said. "He's grown Jordy up. Jordy is a good player, he has his own skills. But, he's really benefited by being a partner with Barmes for two years."

Walker says he has leaned on Barmes for advice.

"He's a huge piece to this organization. He's been very positive and very helpful to the rest of us, especially the middle infielders," Walker said.

In what could be a last run for the shortstop who made his Major League debut 11 years ago, Barmes seems to be enjoying the ride.

"I couldn't be happier for all these guys in the clubhouse and everyone has contributed and made it the season that it has," Barmes said. "It's been a blast for me to be a part of."

It's a career that was highlighted by a .290 average in Colorado in 2007 and 23 homers and 76 RBI in 2009. Barmes would probably be most proud of what is said next.

"He's showed up every day and challenged those guys to get better," Hurdle said. "When he has come in, he's made a difference. There is also an intangible called veteran leadership."

"He's done everything the organization has asked," Walker said. "He's helped the young guys every way you can. You can't ask for a better teammate."
