Volquez On Wild Card Game: 'I Think I Deserve To Pitch This Game'

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - The only previous time Edinson Volquez started a postseason game was in the 2010 National League Division Series. Pitching for the Reds against the Phillies, he gave up four runs in one and two-thirds innings and took the loss.

Now Volquez is preparing to take the mound for the Pirates against the Giants in Wednesday's National League wild card game. Before Tuesday's workout at PNC Park, he spoke with the confidence of a pitcher that hasn't lost since July 21.

"I'm really excited," he said. "I think I deserve to pitch this game. I'm going to pitch my best, and we'll see what happens."

Volquez's record stood at 4-6 on June 18, but he finished 13-7. He won his last five decisions. He also did not allow a run over his final two starts. He did not face San Francisco during the season.

When asked if he took anything away from that postseason game four years ago, Volquez said he doesn't have to change anything, just pitch "my own game."
