Woman Sentenced To Pay Restitution After Embezzling $100K From Bookstore
GREENSBURG (KDKA) – She admitted to stealing thousands from a Westmoreland County community college bookstore.
But Susan Lorraine Brown won't spend a day in jail as a result of her sentencing hearing Tuesday.
The 60-year-old pleaded guilty to a scheme that allowed her to pocket cash from the school's bookstore where she worked for 20 years.
"Everything is broke," said defense attorney Jeff Monzo. "Her health, her family, her reputation – she's suffering a great deal from what happened."
Charged with stealing more than $100,000 from 2008 to 2012, Brown told the court, "I'm very sorry. This has destroyed my marriage, my family life, no matter what happens, my life will never be the same."
Brown could have faced up to 23 months in prison. But her attorney argued Brown had no prior arrests and is suffering from ovarian cancer and should not go to jail. Judge Debra Pezze agreed.
She's sentenced to 10 years' probation, straight probation and payment of restitution.
Brown will pay the restitution and court costs at $25 per month.
