2014 Donut Dash Raises Money For Live Like Lou Foundation

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - You have probably heard of runners who load up on carbs before a big run.

In a special kind of event in Pittsburgh this weekend, runners were encouraged to down carbs while running.

It was a sweet way to raise money for a good cause.

"This is you run a mile, you eat six doughnuts, then you run another mile and try not to puke and it's all for Live Like Lou," Cassie Conti said.

Time and pace don't really matter. Runners said the ultimate success is eating fast and keeping the donuts down during that second mile.

The Donut Dash was Ron Brown's second race of the day. He ran the Mario Lemieux 6.6K Run and Family Walk too.

For both events, he was dressed in full firefighter gear.

"I'm going good. I'm really hungry, so I'm going to tear up these doughnuts," Brown said.

Proceeds from the event go to the Live Like Lou Foundation, which benefits local families battling ALS.

"Last year, we raised around $20,000 and this year, it is a whole lot more than that. We're really excited for that, excited to donate to such a great cause," Jake Correa said.

The goal this year was.to raise $100,000.

As for turnout, it was about triple last year with around 900 runners registered.

The fun run was started six years ago by Sigma Alpha Epsilon, a fraternity at Carnegie Mellon University.
