Bob Walk: Salary Might Not Be Biggest Obstacle To Signing Martin

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) – Pirates broadcaster Bob Walk joined "The Fan Morning Show" on Wednesday for the final 2014 edition of his weekly spot.

During the interview, Walk talked about the potential of Russell Martin re-signing with the Pirates.

He said the biggest obstacle to them doing so many not be how much money they can offer him, as many suspect.

"I would say that when you're talking about the money per year, they're probably going to be right there with anybody else," Walk said. "What I'm afraid of is somebody that has very deep pockets is going to say, 'Okay, we're going to go five years on a contract,' which is probably, from just a pure baseball point of view, a little long for somebody that's Russell's age. There are teams out there in those big markets like the Red Sox, for instance, who will look at that and say, 'We've got him for three years, and if he has to be a backup the final two, and he's being way overpaid those final two years, who cares?' They can live with that. That's a situation we probably can't live with. If it's a three-year type contract, I think we'll be right there with everybody else money-wise, and we would have an excellent chance of bringing him back."
