NEW KENSINGTON (KDKA) — Police in Westmoreland County raided an apartment in New Kensington early this morning, seizing drugs and taking several people into custody.

Police showed up around 6:30 a.m. in the 300-block of Fourth Avenue, a place that has been raided before.

Neighbors say that section of New Kensington is known for drug activity.

Police say they took seven people into custody, including two men who tried to escape but surrendered when they realized they were surrounded. Four of the suspects are from Westmoreland County and two from Detroit, Mich.

“Two of them are from Detroit, Michigan, which is odd, because we haven’t found out why they’re here yet,” said New Kensington Police Chief Thomas Klawinski.

Police say they found heroin, cocaine, marijuana and about $2,500 in cash.

But the raid would not have happened if calls to police weren’t made, they say.

“The neighbors told us there was a problem there,” Klawinski said. “And this was an investigation that’s been going on for several months.”

One woman was taken into custody during the raid and later released. She said she didn’t know illegal drug activity was happening inside the home.

Six others are in the Westmoreland County Jail on felony drug charges.
