Officials Rescue Deer From Highland Park Reservoir
HIGHLAND PARK (KDKA) - A deer was rescued from the Highland Park Reservoir Monday night.
According to officials at the scene, the deer was likely looking for a drink when it slipped into the water.
"It happens a couple times a year," said Melissa Rubin with Pittsburgh Water and Sewer. "It's an open air reservoir. We have deer, we have ducks."
In the early summer of 2010, a whitetail deer also got stuck -- and in May of 2011 two deer wandered into the reservoir.
The buck couldn't get back out because of the steep concrete walls.
Rescuers used a boat and a rope to pull the deer out of the water. However, the deer didn't like the lasso and wasn't getting out without a fight.
"He put up a pretty good fight," said Rubin. "There was actually some concern that he looked like he didn't want to go into the woods, he looked like he wanted to jump back in."
Once it was back on land, the deer ran off into the woods.
Part of the reason that Pittsburgh Water is not more upset about a deer being in the reservoir is because it's not finished water. It still has to be processed and filtered before it goes to the faucet in your home.
