Highmark To Open Sleep Apnea Supplies Store

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Most people who are diagnosed with sleep apnea have to re-order their supplies through the mail.

However, Highmark is opening a new, first-of-its kind store in our area to make replacing supplies easier and more convenient.

REMWorks Sleep Store is currently under construction at the Waterfront in Homestead.

Behind the restful shades of teal and blue is a new kind of store that some people with sleep trouble have only dreamed of.

"We are not aware of anyone else who's doing anything quite like this," says Amy Phillips, director of REMWorks.

The store is brought to you by Highmark, and will sell only medical sleep equipment, such as CPAP and non-prescription sleep aids and devices that have been studied to be safe and effective.

"We've created an upscale spa-like environment where they don't have to walk past the walkers, and the hospital beds," she explains.

It's not a place to get a sleep study, or a prescription for CPAP.

"We will not be prescribing or diagnosing any of that, we're really there to offer the solutions," she said.

But it is staffed by people with clinical backgrounds, and you can have a mask fitted, meet with a sleep coach, and get information about sleep.

"We have three respiratory therapists, a polysomnographic technologist, and a nurse on staff," Phillips says.

This is a pilot program. If the daily volume meets expectations, then more stores may be opening.

"We chose the Waterfront because it's easily accessible from the south and the east," she said. "When we're up and going, we'll have probably 35 to 40 CPAP customers only at that point, and then the retail traffic on top of that. Our whole premise why we didn't name it Highmark, and we named it REMWorks is because we want people to know it's open to everyone. We will accept most major insurances, as well as the regional plans here."

A grand opening is planned for Dec. 13. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and evenings by appointment.
