Fire Rips Through Unity Township Duplex

UNITY TOWNSHIP (KDKA)- Crews were on the scene of a big fire in Westmoreland County.

Around 3:30 a.m. Friday, the duplex along Puriton Avenue in Unity Township went up in flames.

When crews arrived on scene the house was engulfed in flames. As of 5:30 a.m., smoke was still coming from the duplex.

"Flames coming out all over the place, my dogs were going crazy," said neighbor Mark Repko. "I thought somebody was knocking on the door. I come walking out of the bedroom, I have a window parallel to the house and what I seen was flames."

Two people were injured in the fire, including the woman who lived inside the home, who uses a wheelchair. Her son was also home at the time of the fire and was burned.

At first, one person was unaccounted for, but he was later located.

The fire was under control within an hour, but there were some problems initially with rocks in the hose line, affecting the water supply, forcing firefighters out of the house.

No word on the cause of the fire.
