Airsoft Gun Incident At Minadeo Elementary Under Investigation

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Investigators are looking into an incident at Pittsburgh Minadeo Elementary School in Squirrel Hill.

A letter was sent home to parents saying that a student was injured when an airsoft gun went off inside the school. The shot hit one student in the back.

The letter reads in part: "When a child brings a weapon, toy or real, to school, it is serious... Regardless of intentions, we must comply with the law and the school district's Code of Student Conduct."

The Pittsburgh Public School District says two fifth grade students brought the airsoft guns to school on Friday, Nov. 21.

Several students reported seeing them in the school.

"I thought the school did a very good job of trying to reinforce to parents that we don't want any kind of guns coming on the property," said Donna Ruff, a parent.

Airsoft guns are similar to BB guns, but use plastic pellets instead of metal BBs. While they are non-lethal, they are still considered to be a weapon.

Officials eventually found the airsoft guns and confiscated them.

The two students were sent home. They're being disciplined by the school and they've also been cited by school police.
