Batch Foundation Seeks Volunteers For Gift Wrapping Party

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A former Pittsburgh Steeler and his wife continue to give back to the community.

For the holidays, they're kicking their efforts into high gear and there's an easy way you can help out too.

For Charlie Batch and his wife, Latasha, this has become a tradition.

For the past several years, they've hosted a big wrapping party.

It's a time for volunteers to put the finishing touches on more than 5,000 toys donated through the Batch-A-Toys Drive.

"First of all, we're humbled by it because we start very early in the morning and we have over 100 volunteers who actually help out and come over and wrap presents," Batch said.

Christmas Eve is even more special for the Batch family.

That's when they hand deliver the presents to 100 struggling families.

"Obviously, every family situation is different when you go to the home, but when you get there, they are just so appreciative of it because they're like without this, we may not have Christmas," Batch said.

It's not just toys that are passed out. Batch said they focus on the household essentials as well.

"We had a child who actually wrote us a letter and they didn't talk about and thank us for their toy. They thanked us for the spoon that they had because now they were able to eat cereal and I'm like, 'Wow.' And that kind of sets you back a little bit," Batch said.

It's not too late to help out.

You can register to be a volunteer at the wrapping party on Dec. 2 at the U.S. Steel Building.

Also, you can make toy donations for kids and teens of all ages at these four locations:

  • Dunkin Donuts
  • Gap
  • U-Haul
  • FastSigns
