PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Jodie Guthrie, like most moms about-to-be was so excited.

On her Facebook page she posted:

“Went to Magee for an ultrasound and Trace Joseph Weatherwalk is 5-pounds-9-ounces…God Blessed this perfect angel – and I can’t wait to meet him.”

However, 30-year-old Jodie will never hold the baby boy that she, and her boyfriend, George Weatherwalk, were expecting in a month.

Wednesday afternoon, Jodie was sheltering under the awning of a Rite Aid Pharmacy on the North Side around 3:45 p.m. A driver lost control of his Dodge minivan as he pulled into a parking spot.

“The driver may have hit the gas instead of the brake causing the car to lurch over, off the curb and pinned the woman against the wall.” says Pittsburgh Police Zone 1 Commander RaShall Brackney.

Trace Joseph Weatherwalk was delivered by emergency C-Section at Allegheny General Hospital.

His mother died half-an-hour later.

The baby is now in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Hospital. At last report, the child was in critical, but stable condition.

The driver was identified as Allan Massie, 88, of the North Side. His wife, in her 60s, was also with him. Both were distraught and questioned by police.

“He appeared to be disoriented at that point in time,” says Brackney.

“I can’t imagine what her family is going through right now – the holiday,” Candy Thompson says.

She’s heartbroken by her grandfather’s part in the accident.

“Because he has Alzheimer’s and I don’t even think he might remember tomorrow what happened today,” she says.

Thompson says that Jodie Guthrie, her baby, and her family will be in her thoughts and prayers this Thanksgiving as they likely will be in the hearts and minds of anyone who hears the story.
