Personal Care Home Evacuated Due To Carbon Monoxide Concerns

DUQUESNE (KDKA)- A personal care home was evacuated Monday night over concerns of carbon monoxide.

A woman who lives at the Autumn Commons on Grant Avenue went to UPMC McKeesport Hospital after feeling ill. Doctors said she had life-threatening levels of carbon monoxide.

Firefighters quickly responded to the personal care home to check the carbon monoxide levels. After sweeping the home twice with CO monitors, the fire department called in People's Gas for help.

Gas workers used their equipment to search for a possible carbon monoxide leak. However, the only thing they found was a small amount of CO near the hot water heater in the basement.

"It still draws concern," said Duquesne Fire Chief Frank Cobb.  "The fact is we have negative readings on high levels of CO in the building kind of puzzles me. Where did the carbon monoxide come from that this lady has in her system?"

The 20 to 25 residents of the personal care home were allowed back into their apartments around 11:30 p.m.

Doctors are still trying to determine how the woman obtained such a high level of carbon monoxide in her body.
