PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Pennsylvania State Police are trying to piece together what led to a fatal pedestrian accident on the Parkway East overnight.
One of the drivers accused of hitting 44-year-old Christopher Ballard of Morgantown has now come forward.READ MORE: Kennywood Revamps The Old Mill For Park's 125th Anniversary
According to police, the crash happened around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, about a half mile east of the Boulevard of the Allies exit.
State police say Ballard was walking in the left lane of the Parkway East outbound when he was struck by a blue car.
The impact of the crash threw Ballard into the westbound lanes, where he was struck by two more cars. None of the drivers stopped to see what they hit.
“They might have thought they hit an animal. Who suspects a pedestrian walking down the interstate?” Trooper Robin Mungo said.
Police suspect the front of the car that initially hit Ballard should have heavy front end damage.READ MORE: 24th Annual Pittsburgh Racial Justice Summit Being Held Virtually
“There was some evidence recovered at the scene, so that’s why we believe it was a blue vehicle,” Mungo said.
Police do not have a description of the other two cars that hit the man. There were no disabled cars near the crash, and there’s no sign of him being homeless.
“He was in multiple layers, jeans, a gray jacket and a plaid shirt. This is not something you would typically see if we’re dealing with someone out in the elements all the time,” Mungo said.
It is unclear if charges will be filed. That will be left up to the district attorney.
If you have any information, you are being asked to contact the Pennsylvania State Police Moon Township barracks.
PennDot says some of the cameras that record that section of the Parkway were not working during the accident.
