Businessman, Police Save Holiday For Local Kids After Toys For Tots Glitch

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A local businessman with a lot of toys reached out to KDKA-TV and Get Marty after local charities were having trouble getting their Toys For Tots deliveries.

David Maniet, who owns a financial planning business, had a warehouse full of toys.

"I just wanted to help to make sure as many children as possible can have toys this Christmas," said Maniet.

Turns out, there was some sort of snafu regarding a number of charities and this year's request for the Toys For Tots program run by the Marines.

Maj. Brian Murray, a retired Marine and the program's vice president, tells KDKA'S Marty Griffin that they were told by some organizations they filled out the paperwork for toys.

However, the Marines say they did not get that paperwork.

"Could have been any number of online errors," says Maj. Murray.

Meanwhile, Maniet offered up his toys.

"I had them from a toy store liquidation," says the financial advisor.

The Pittsburgh Police shipped the toys to a few local charities, including The East Liberty Family Health Care Center.

"It's a Christmas miracle," says Janice Kondel with the center.

The health care center will now hand out the toys to more than 500 needy families.
