Local Police Departments Deliver Gifts On Christmas Eve

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Santa is always dressed in red, but today, some men in blue around the area made this a merry Christmas for some local kids.

In New Sewickley, it's simple because police officers are part of the community.

Some days they're out there patrolling the streets, some days they arrest people, but today they played Santa Claus.

"Yes, they're here every day dealing with the most evils of the community, but they still have a sensitive side," New Sewickley Police Chief Ron Leindecker said.

Their sensitive side was on display today as officers loaded up a cruiser with Christmas toys for local families.

They will wait until it's dark and until the kids are asleep too.

"They do have families of their own. They care for the families of this community," Leindecker said.

The entire Monaca Police Department participated too.

Officer James Ball started it and says folks appreciate police officers.

"Most people are helpful and want to help the police to keep their community safe," he said.

At the Eddy home, they have nothing but love for police officers. The Monaca couple is raising their five grandchildren.

"They're respected and they work hard. They're there to protect us," Kathy Eddy said.

In Monaca, this will be a yearly gesture of police officers becoming Santa for a day. This sort of event is being repeated time and time again at police departments across the country today.

The men and woman who protect and serve just want folks to know that it's their intention to do the right thing.
