Man Arrested In Connection With Monroeville Armed Robbery

MONROEVILLE (KDKA) – A man has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery and brief police chase in Monroeville Tuesday.

According to police, the Harbor Freight Tools store was robbed around 9:30 p.m.

An employee told police she was taking cash from the register to the office when a masked man closed the door behind them.

The suspect ordered her to put all the money, which amounted to about $6,650, into deposit bags. He then zip-tied the woman's hands.

"He did get over $6,000 in money and he did restrain or tie up the people in the store," Monroeville Police Chief Doug Cole said.

As the woman was notifying her coworkers of the situation over a headset she was wearing, the robber confronted two other employees and zip-tied their hands.

Police responded and tried to stop him as he was leaving in a car he stole from an employee.

He was taken into custody shortly after ditching the vehicle and fleeing on foot.

"Had a short pursuit and took an actor into custody," Chief Cole said.

The arrest came after the suspect crashed in front of Goodyear Tire, and ran on foot behind the Kmart.

Police recovered the money and a loaded handgun.

The gun came back as a stolen weapon, which was reported back in June of 2011, according to court documents.

Police said the man was slightly injured from crashing the stolen car and was taken to an area hospital.

His name has not been released because police believe he gave them a false name. Police also believe he's used 17 other aliases in the past.

"We have him as a John Doe currently. We believe there's a bunch of aliases that he uses," Chief Cole said.

Monroeville Police will be working with the Allegheny County Crime lab to see if the stolen gun used in last night's robbery was involved in any prior crimes.
