Woman Gets Special Surprise For Work In North Side Neighborhood

NORTH SIDE (KDKA) – Fred Rodgers sang about it being a beautiful day in the neighborhood.

And the North Side shines thanks to a special lady name Becky.

A 2003 Dodge pickup has more than 100 bows on it for a very good reason.

"It has 130 bows on it, because this is a gift from 130 different folks," said Mark Fatla, Executive Directors of the North Side Leadership Conference.

Miss Becky's old truck was totaled one October night when it was parked on Brighton Road. It meant Becky might not be able to continue her beautification efforts in her neighborhood.

"I knew within myself that I was doing a good service in the community, but I didn't know it had reached a point where people where people really wanted to contribute to me buying a new vehicle," said Becky.

But they did. Some gave $1, others as much as $500 to buy Becky a new truck to haul flowers, dirt, mulch and to help a neighbor from time-to-time.

"I always felt that there should be some place of beauty that I should see and every place that I have ever lived, I have always planted flowers," said Becky.

Because to Becky, "the way a neighborhood looks is an expression of the people who live there."
Neighbors helped the North Side Leadership conference raise more than $10,000 to replace her ride.

"Whatever is left that wasn't spent on the truck will then go to those community gardens," said Fatla.

Becky is already planning what needs to be done this spring.

"I am not going to quit because I am not tired yet," said Becky.

And she once again has a truck to haul her loving green thumbs all around the North Side.
