Garth Brooks Double Header Concerts Create Traffic Gridlock
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Country music superstar Garth Brooks is performing two double-headers in a row in Pittsburgh Friday and Saturday night.
Friday night's first show at Consol Energy Center ended around 9 p.m., which allowed 90 minutes for 18,000 fans leave the area and 13,000 to 15,000 new fans to drive in, park and get seated in time for the 10:30 p.m. show.
Traffic at times was at a dead stop, which is why Cheryl and Dana Howard jumped out of a cab and decided to walk.
Dana Howard explained that if his wife Cheryl didn't get to see Brooks "it wasn't going to be pretty."
Demand was so great to see Brooks, three planned shows jumped to six.
And to make that happen, Brooks explained during a press conference they had to do two shows both Friday and Saturday night. He said arena space is just in great demand.
Police tried to keep things moving. And some people showed up super early to avoid the gridlock. A group of people who showed up before the first concert was even over was kept behind a fence.
The gridlock lasted for about 20 minutes and then cleared even before the 10:30 start time of the second concert. It appeared most people made it to the concert on time.
The Port Authority has put out a warning for folks attending Saturday night's late show.
If the concert ends around 1:30 a.m., PAT wants people to realize most transit service stops at that hour or even before.
