Asst. Police Chief Speaks Out After Shooting Outside Her Home

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Assistant Chief of the Pittsburgh Police is speaking out after three teens were shot outside of her house.

"My grandson, he says he doesn't know who was shooting at them or why," said Asst. Police Chief Maurita Bryant. "Do I believe him? No."

The assistant chief was frank about the shooting that took place on the steps of her home.

The drive-by Sunday in Homewood left three teenagers wounded – two girls and a boy.

The boy is the best friend of Bryant's 16-year-old grandson, who had also been standing with the group.

"I haven't talked to the other young man," said Bryant. "But I am sure he is probably saying the same thing and that frustrates me or angers me more than anything."

Bryant says she has been living in Homewood since the '80s. She says she has never had any fears or trouble and she wants her neighbors to know that she was not the target.

"I also want to send my heartfelt prayers out to three young people who were shot in front of my residence, especially the young girl who is still recovering from some very serious wounds," she said.

Bryant was not at home at the time of the shooting.

"I was at the Urban League Sunday, at the August Wilson Center," she said. "I had my phone silent, I happened to check the time and I saw the page 7107 Kedron, three people shot."

So far, there haven't been any arrests.

"My grandson is believed to be one of the targets, possibly," said Bryant.

"If my grandson did something that he had no business doing, he would be in jail right now and he knows that," she added.

Bryant asked anyone who knows anything about the shooting to call police. She says that includes her grandson.
