PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A New Castle teen was killed after the car he was riding in lost control and hit a tree early Sunday morning.

It happened around 2:20 a.m. along State Route 108, about a half-mile from Interstate 79, in Plain Grove Township, Lawrence County.

Police say 19-year-old Giovanni Costa was killed in the accident – he was one of five people in the car.

The police report states that driver 23-year-old Andrew Birch lost control of the car, when it went off the road and slammed into a tree.

Birch was taken to the hospital via helicopter with severe injuries.

Three other passengers were also taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The road was closed for six hours while state trooper investigated.

It’s unclear if the crash was weather related.
