Scholarship Set Up In Honor Of Armored Vehicle Heist Victim

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The victim of the 2012 armored truck heist is being remembered by young men who in many cases, never met Michael Haines.

Now, a new scholarship that will bear his name.

The president of Phi Delta Theta reiterated a promise this weekend.

"As long as we are here, he will never be forgotten," Wes Moore said.

Haines was a fraternity brother of theirs at Robert Morris University. On Feb. 18, 2012, he was killed by Ken Konias in an armored truck heist.

"When he passed away, we were juniors, and that was our goal senior year to get the scholarship endowed. Our biggest thing was being able to endow it. It may have only took two-and-a-half years or three years, but now I can actually say that I am done here, that I have finally graduated," Jarrod Prugar said.

Now a $25,000 scholarship has been endowed in Haines' name at the Pennsylvania chapter of the fraternity. Haines was a founding member.

"It's been a great recognition of Mike, but it has also been a great display of character on the part of the fraternity. It says a great deal about the young men who have worked so hard," Ann Haines, Michael's mother, said.

Recipients of the scholarship must demonstrate the principles of the fraternity, friendship, sound learning, and rectitude.

"I think he would not be surprised. I think he would have expected these young men to respond the way they did," Ann Haines said.

"This has been a common goal for the entire chapter for almost three years now. So, it feels incredible that we were able to accomplish this," Moore said.

"The impact that he had is getting guys to come back and help with the chapter and show that we were able to do good things," Prugar said.
