Monroeville Mall Shooting Victim Shares Her Story

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Stores were on lockdown, and people ran for their lives. An ordinary trip to the Monroeville Mall turned violent for people earlier this month when a gunman opened fire.

Today, one person who was injured in the shooting told her story to Mikey and Big Bob on "The Morning Freak Show" on 96.1 KISS.

Mary Singleton and her husband, Tom, were shopping at the mall with their teenage son when someone started shooting.

Mary says she never saw it coming.

"It's just a shame," says Singleton. "You never thought it's going to happen to you."

Singleton described what she saw the gunman doing.

"He went back out to the car, to be honest, to get a gun. He walked in the mall with it not concealed, and just, his target was right in front of me," says Singleton.

Mary and her husband were hit, along with 20-year-old Davon Jones. Police believe Jones was the intended target.

Eventually, police were able to use social media to track down the alleged shooter, 17-year-old Tarod Thornhill. They found him at a home in Brackenridge.

He is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and recklessly endangering other people.

Both Mary and Tom were hospitalized, along with Jones. Mary and Tom have been released from the hospital, and are now in a rehab facility.

As for Jones, at last check, he was in fair condition at Forbes Hospital.

For the Singletons, there's a long road ahead. But Tom has more healing to do than his wife because he took a bullet for her.

"My husband's a hero," says Singleton. "He walked in front of me to take that [bullet], and then I got the next one."

The bullet severed Tom's femoral artery, and he went into cardiac arrest. Doctors say the heart attack was caused by the trauma his body suffered.

On Tuesday night, the Singletons got a chance to thank the police officer who ran over and saved Tom's life. They also want to thank everyone who has helped them, and has pushed them to move forward and recover.

"Thank you to everybody," says Singleton. "I mean, my community as a whole, the whole community has been just so wonderful."
