Latest Round Of Winter Weather Creates Slick Driving Conditions

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The calendar may say March, but winter is still going strong.

The latest round of winter weather caused a slew of accidents across the area this morning.

"From all the [precipitation] that we had yesterday and overnight it froze over mainly overnight and early this morning," Pittsburgh Chief Operations Officer Guy Costa said.

The ice-covered roads were obvious in some areas and more deceiving in others.

Whether you could see it or not, the conditions left behind crumpled cars, poles and walls.

In Banksville a driver hit ice, slid into a pole and left his car in the middle of Rutherford Avenue.

A Pittsburgh Public Works salt truck came to salt the road and ended up part of the accident.

"Tried to back down while salting. He lost traction and control, slid all the way down the street taking out the car in the middle and ended up against these two vehicles over here. This street is definitely a reoccurring problem," Jason Eshleman said.

No one was injured, but two people had to be taken to the hospital after another accident on North Matilda Street, where two cars and a city garbage truck crashed.

The truck and two salt trucks were among other Pittsburgh Public Safety vehicles that were also involved in the accident.

Costa said it shows people that crews are out doing what they can to make things safe.

"Mornings like today, Public Works crews can be involved in accidents just like everybody else," Costa said.

Salt supplies are being replenished as the past five weeks have taxed the supply.

"They're using it as quickly as it's coming in. So, we are taking deliveries today and we'll get through this and the next couple days okay," Costa said.

Costa said right now, the city is on a Level 2 which means that things should be cleared in about a day. That's a good thing because we're expected to get another round of freezing rain later this week.
