Crime Stoppers: Police Seek Suspect In Beltzhoover Shooting

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Detectives are asking for the public's help as they search for a suspect in the fatal shooting of a man who was found dead in a car on Route 51.

It was in the early morning hours of Jan. 29 when police heard gunshots while patrolling the Beltzhoover section of the city. They spotted a car speeding away from the scene.

Officers chased it down Route 51, thinking it was the gunman, but they found the victim dead in the backseat instead. He is identified as 23-year-old Stephon Reed.

"This appears to be an innocent victim in every way, in the backseat of a car, not engaged in any activity," said Pittsburgh Police Commander RaShall Brackney. "He and his friends had just gone out for the night."

Reed's friends told police a young African-American man, who was wearing dark clothing, walked up to the car and fired several shots.

"Stephon was not known to hang out in the Beltzhoover area or to patronize that area," said Commander Brackney. "He lived with his mother, who is devastated. She's a quadriplegic from a car accident, so there's been some tragedy in this family."

Police believe somebody, somewhere knows what happened. They're asking witnesses to come forward.

"This was a large crowd that was there. We're hoping the community says once again, we've had enough of these types of incidents," Commander Brackney said.

The Pittsburgh Crime Stoppers number is 412-255-8477.

Information leading to an arrest and conviction could be worth up to $1,000.
