Flooding Closes Roads In Fayette, Greene, Washington, Westmoreland Co.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The latest round of snow and precipitation caused traffic issues across the Pittsburgh region Thursday, but it was a weather issue of a different kind creating problems to the south of the city.

Flooding prompted the closure of roads in Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

During the overnight hours, high water rolled in to Fayette City.

"The power of water and what it can do," said Sadie Bednarczyk, a Fayette County resident.

Not only was the water up, the power was down.

"For them to be put out with no heat or electricity down here, it's a shame," said Bednarczyk.

She, along with many, are somewhat trapped, the elements bracketing them in for the time being.

"We can go up the back roads, but with the snow, the boroughs are having a hard time keeping up with the roads," Bednarczyk said. "We're just hanging out in our homes, trying to keep warm right now."

Fayette City is not alone.

The road that supposed to head toward Brownsville now looks more like a frozen canal. It will likely be some time before it makes its way to the Mon River. The same goes for Fayette City.

"It' just depends on the weather," Bednarczyk says. "If we get slammed with warm weather and it melts fast, it could be days or a week."

PennDOT says to avoid driving through standing water. As a result, the following roads have been closed for the time being:

Fayette County

-Route 4034 (Perry Road) in Jefferson Township at the intersection of Laureldale Road.

-Route 3003 (Tom Cat Hollow Road) in Springhill and Nicholson townships between Morgantown Road and Geneva Road.
