Mother, Baby Found Dead In Millvale Apartment

MILLVALE (KDKA) – Police are investigating after a mother and baby were found dead in their apartment Friday morning.

According to officials at the scene, the 22-year-old mother, Sara Kessler, and 10-month-old boy, Casey Kessler, were found by a family member this morning.

"It's a very sad situation. We have a 22-year-old mother. Looks like she's been dead for a while, unknown cause at this time. There's also a 10-month-old baby boy in there deceased," Allegheny County Police Assistant Superintendent James Morton said.

The two lived in an apartment in the 100-block of Butler Street.

Officials believe the mother mother may have died up to two weeks ago and the child died of starvation later.

"She was found in the bedroom on the bed, unknown causes at this time," Morton said. "The baby was found in the living room."

Police, and sources who know the family, say a drug overdose is suspected.

A source told KDKA that needles were found all over the apartment. A former resident of the building, who did not want to be identified, says she knows the family.

"The daughter was a drug addict," she said. "They tried to get her help many times, but, you know, it just doesn't work."

The mother and baby lived in the only occupied apartment on the second floor. Sadly, no one was around to hear the baby crying. But the woman who knew the family says that may not be true.

"The girl that lived downstairs of that apartment heard that baby crying for two days," she said. "Now why she didn't alert anybody, I don't know. That baby never had a chance."

But police say no foul play is suspected.

"The cause will be determined later, but by our experience in things, we can't see any problems with this other than it's a very sad day here," Morton said.
