Abandoned Building Partially Collapses On North Side

NORTH SIDE (KDKA) - After years of standing tall, neighbors say they're glad to see an abandoned apartment building on Perrysville Avenue come down.

"It's an eyesore. We have people coming around here doing drugs, selling drugs. Too much activity right there," neighbor Maria Haley said.

Haley didn't hear the bricks crumbling down around 10 p.m. Monday, but she definitely noticed the heavy equipment Tuesday morning.

After the collapse, the city says it cordoned off the area and issued an emergency bid to demolish the building.

Bricks collapsed onto the occupied apartment building next door. The Red Cross had to evacuate the three families that live there. They were put up in a hotel.

"I'm just surprised nobody got hurt. That's pretty much my reaction. I didn't hear it. I mean, it's a lot of damage obviously," neighbor Kyle Sundo said.

Sundo said a lot of people walk by the abandoned building daily.

"People always walk through here with groceries and stuff," Sundo said.

Once the apartment building is torn down, the city will assess the damage to the occupied building next door and determine what repairs need to be made.

No one was injured in the collapse.
